How to Bet on Football: A Beginner’s Guide Built on 720 Real Tips

Most beginner guides stop at “open an account and pick a team”. This one also shows what happened to the 720 tips we have published and settled: which markets held up, which lost, and the habits that cost money fastest.

720tips published and settled since March 2026, every result public
+5.8%return on our double chance main tips, the best market
−21.2%return on our match result (1X2) main tips, the worst
−20.7%return on our 243 extra tips, against −4.0% for main tips

Getting started: account, verification, limits

Before your first bet, get the basics right. They protect you more than any tip can:

  • Choose a licensed bookmaker. Only use operators licensed in your country. Licensed sites must verify your age and identity, protect your funds and offer tools to limit your betting.
  • Verify your account early. You will need ID and sometimes proof of address. Doing it before you deposit avoids delays when you want to withdraw.
  • Set limits before you deposit. Deposit, loss and time limits are free. Set them on day one, while you are calm, not after a bad night.
  • Decide your bankroll. Money you can afford to lose and nothing else. Read our bankroll guide: in our tests, staking more than 2% per bet wiped out most of a bankroll on the same tips.

Choose your market

A market is what you bet on. These are the ones you will see most:

  • Match result (1X2): home win, draw or away win. The simplest bet, with three outcomes.
  • Double chance: two of the three outcomes in one bet, for example home win or draw. Wins more often, at lower odds.
  • Asian handicap: one team gets a head start and the draw disappears; whole lines can refund your stake. See our Asian handicap guide.
  • Over/under goals: more or fewer total goals than a line such as 2.5. See our over/under guide.
  • Both teams to score: yes if both sides score. See our BTTS guide.

Which markets worked for us? Our main tips by market:

Market Tips Won Avg. odds Return
Double chance 57 73.7% 1.44 +5.8%
Asian handicap 216 63.9% 1.42 −1.3%
Both teams to score 7 57.1% 1.66 −4.3%
Over/under goals 150 67.3% 1.42 −5.6%
Match result (1X2) 46 45.7% 1.78 −21.2%

Key finding

The simplest market was our worst. Our 1X2 tips lost 21.2%, while double chance (+5.8%) and Asian handicap (−1.3%) held up best. Markets that soften a narrow miss forgave our mistakes; the three-way result did not.

Place your bet

Pick the match, tap the price you want and it lands on your bet slip. Enter your stake and check the potential return before you confirm:

Return = stake × decimal odds
10 units at odds of 1.80 return 18 units if the bet wins: your 10 back plus 8 profit. If it loses, you lose the 10.

Start with single bets: one selection per bet. Combining several selections into an accumulator multiplies the odds, but also the bookmaker margin and your mistakes. When we combined our own main tips into daily trebles, the loss doubled. More in our accumulator guide.

Understand what the odds mean

Odds are a probability in disguise. Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 2.00 means 50%, 1.50 means 67%. Add up all outcomes of a match and you get more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker margin, typically 5 to 8% on match result markets in our measurements.

That margin is why betting on everything loses slowly, and why comparing prices between bookmakers matters. Our odds guide explains it with real numbers, and our value betting test shows why a bet that looks like value on paper often is not.

Fewer bets, better bets

Next to our main tips we also published extra tips: more speculative picks at higher odds. Side by side:

Market Main tips Main return Extra tips Extra return
Double chance 57 +5.8% 51 −2.0%
Asian handicap 216 −1.3% 88 −20.3%
Over/under goals 150 −5.6% 67 −35.0%
Match result (1X2) 46 −21.2% 27 −15.3%
Both teams to score 7 −4.3% 10 −39.1%
All tips 477 −4.0% 243 −20.7%

Source: Daily Sport Pick tips, 10 March to 11 October 2026. Main tips averaged odds of 1.46, extra tips about 2.22.

Key finding

The extra tips lost five times as much as the main tips: −20.7% against −4.0%. More bets at higher odds did not mean more profit. It meant more margin and more mistakes.

The beginner mistakes that cost the most

  • Betting too big. In our replay, staking 5% of the bankroll per bet left 29 of 100 on the same tips that left 82 at 1%.
  • Chasing losses. Raising stakes after a loss turns a normal losing run into a disaster. Our tips had losing runs of up to five in a row and a drawdown of 28 units at 1 unit per bet.
  • Building big accumulators. Every leg adds margin: a 5-fold at a 5.4% margin per leg costs 23% in expectation.
  • Trusting confident tips blindly. Our own picks rated above 80% won about two thirds of the time. Confidence is not certainty.
  • Judging on a few weeks. Our record swung from −22.4% in April to +13.5% in September. Judge any method on hundreds of bets.
  • Ignoring help. Betting should stay fun. If it stops being fun, BeGambleAware offers free, confidential help. Only bet if you are 18 or older.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start betting on football?

Choose a bookmaker licensed in your country, verify your account, set deposit and loss limits, and decide on a bankroll you can afford to lose. Start with small single bets on simple markets and keep a record of every bet.

Which football bet is best for beginners?

A single bet on a market you understand. In our own published tips, double chance (+5.8%) and Asian handicap (-1.3%) held up best, while match result (1X2) tips lost 21.2%. No market guarantees profit.

How much should I bet as a beginner?

One to two percent of your betting bankroll per bet. When we replayed our tips, 1% per bet lost 18% of the bankroll over seven months, while 5% per bet lost 71% on exactly the same tips.

How do football betting odds work?

Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked. Odds of 2.50 on 10 units return 25 if you win. Dividing 1 by the odds gives the implied probability: 2.50 means 40%, before the bookmaker margin.
