Over/Under Goals Explained: What 81,113 Matches Tell Us

Over/under is the simplest goals bet there is: will the match have more or fewer goals than the line? We counted how often every line actually lands across 81,113 matches, by league, checked how bookmakers price it and published how our own over/under tips did.

54.3%of 81,113 matches went over 2.5 goals
62.8%over 2.5 in the Bundesliga, against 48.1% in Serie A
4.6%average Pinnacle margin on over/under 2.5

What over/under means, and how often each line lands

You bet on the total number of goals in the match, both teams together, in normal time. Over 2.5 wins with three goals or more, Under 2.5 with two or fewer. The half goal means there is never a draw on the bet. Across all 81,113 matches with a final score in our database:

Line Over wins with Under wins with Over landed
0.5 1 goal or more 0-0 only 91.8%
1.5 2 goals or more 0 or 1 goal 75.7%
2.5 3 goals or more 2 goals or fewer 54.3%
3.5 4 goals or more 3 goals or fewer 33.2%
4.5 5 goals or more 4 goals or fewer 18.3%

Source: Daily Sport Pick match database, all matches with a final score, measured 12 October 2026. Over/under bets settle on normal time.

Bookmakers also offer whole lines (Over 2, Over 3), where landing exactly on the line refunds your stake, and quarter lines (Over 2.25, Over 2.75), which split your stake over the two nearest lines, the same way as in our Asian handicap guide.

How many goals a match really has

The average was 2.90 goals per match, but the average hides how the goals are spread:

Total goals Share of matches
0 goals 8.2%
1 goals 16.1%
2 goals 21.4%
3 goals 21.2%
4 goals 14.9%
5 goals 9.4%
6+ goals 8.9%
Key finding

Two goals (21.4%) and three goals (21.2%) were almost exactly as common. That is why 2.5 is the standard line: it splits matches nearly down the middle, and a single goal decides the bet more often than any other line.

Over/under by league

The league changes the picture more than anything else. Per competition, with at least 250 settled matches:

League Matches Goals/match Over 1.5 Over 2.5 Over 3.5
Bundesliga 968 3.22 83.4% 62.8% 43.0%
Eredivisie 1,020 3.19 84.7% 61.3% 40.5%
MLS (USA) 1,346 3.05 80.7% 60.3% 36.1%
Premier League 1,199 2.98 81.8% 58.6% 35.4%
Champions League 850 3.09 78.8% 58.5% 37.6%
Europa League 780 2.83 76.8% 55.9% 31.7%
Jupiler Pro League 781 2.82 77.1% 54.8% 32.0%
Ligue 1 977 2.84 76.9% 54.1% 32.4%
Conference League 1,405 2.81 75.9% 53.6% 30.7%

Argentina, Primera Nacional 482 1.95 59.3% 33.0% 13.1%
Argentina, Torneo Federal A 430 1.86 53.5% 28.8% 14.0%

Source: Daily Sport Pick match database, grouped by competition ID so leagues with the same name in different countries are not mixed. Measured 12 October 2026.

Key finding

Over 2.5 landed in 62.8% of Bundesliga matches and 48.1% of Serie A matches. The same bet at the same odds is a very different proposition depending on the league.

The gap is even bigger on Over 3.5: 43.0% in the Bundesliga against 24.9% in Serie A and 21.9% in Brazil. The lower Argentine divisions are in a category of their own, with fewer than two goals per match on average.

What our model got right and wrong

Our Poisson model gives every match a probability for over 2.5 goals. Comparing 65,047 of those forecasts with the final scores:

Model said Matches Avg. forecast Actually happened
10 to 20% 2,545 15.5% 42.2%
20 to 30% 4,460 25.5% 45.2%
30 to 40% 7,167 35.3% 49.1%
40 to 50% 17,493 44.3% 51.8%
50 to 60% 11,367 55.0% 56.0%
60 to 70% 11,714 64.8% 59.9%
70 to 80% 5,827 74.0% 64.5%
80 to 90% 2,545 84.2% 68.4%

Like with both teams to score, the model was far too confident at the edges: when it said 15%, over 2.5 still landed 42% of the time; when it said 84%, only 68%.

But the direction was right. Grouped by how many goals the model expected, the actual results moved clearly, much more than they did for BTTS:

Expected goals (model) Matches Actual goals/match Over 2.5
Under 2.0 9,356 2.39 43.5%
2.0 to 2.5 18,344 2.74 50.8%
2.5 to 3.0 13,423 2.85 53.8%
3.0 to 3.5 12,870 3.15 59.4%
3.5 or more 11,054 3.46 65.2%
Key finding

Expected goals do carry real information for the goals market: from 43.5% over 2.5 in the lowest group to 65.2% in the highest. The mistake is believing the extremes.

How the market prices over/under 2.5

We converted Pinnacle’s over/under 2.5 prices from 3,465 settled matches into margin-free probabilities and checked how often over actually landed:

Market said (Over) Matches Market Actually Return Over Return Under
40 to 45% 372 42.7% 43.0% −3.4% −4.9%
45 to 50% 542 47.6% 47.6% −3.8% −3.9%
50 to 55% 697 52.5% 52.9% −3.4% −5.2%
55 to 60% 678 57.4% 59.7% −0.3% −9.5%
60 to 65% 454 62.4% 65.2% −0.5% −11.9%
65 to 70% 300 67.2% 70.0% −1.0% −13.4%

Source: Pinnacle pre-match odds, July to October 2026, latest stored price before kick-off, 1 unit per bet. Bet365 (4,201 matches, April to October 2026) showed the same pattern.

Bookmaker Margin Always Over 2.5 Always Under 2.5
Pinnacle 4.6% −1.7% −7.4%
Bet365 5.9% −2.5% −9.5%

The market was close, and over landed two to three points more often than priced when it was the favourite. The bookmaker margin sat mostly on the under side: at both bookmakers backing every under lost about four times as much as backing every over.

Key finding

Over/under 2.5 is one of the cheapest markets there is (4.6% at Pinnacle), but the margin is not split evenly. In our data, Under paid for most of it.

Our own over/under tips

We have published 217 settled over/under tips, all listed in our tips archive. Split by line:

Tip Bets Avg. odds Won Return
Over 1.5 goals 67 1.33 71.6% −4.0%
Under 3.5 goals 35 1.35 71.4% −3.7%
Over 2.5 goals 76 1.75 51.3% −15.3%
Under 2.5 goals 14 1.76 42.9% −32.2%
Over 3.5 goals 22 2.41 27.3% −39.5%

The safe lines did best: Over 1.5 and Under 3.5 came close to break-even at short odds. Over 2.5, our most common goals tip, returned −15.3%, and the riskier Over 3.5 and Under 2.5 lost heavily on small samples.

Our 150 main picks returned −5.6%, the 67 extra picks −35.0%. In our separate value betting test, over/under lost 14.1% over 189 bets. Since our pick rule changed on 19 September 2026, the 9 settled over/under tips returned +4.9%: far too few to mean anything yet.

What it means

The goals market is cheap, but cheap is not the same as easy. Our model’s confidence on Over 2.5 was not backed by results.

How to use over/under sensibly

  • Start with the league. Over 2.5 ranges from about 48% in Serie A and La Liga to over 60% in the Bundesliga and Eredivisie. That base rate is worth more than recent form alone.
  • Turn the odds into a probability. Remove the margin and compare it with the league rate and your own estimate. Big differences usually mean you missed something.
  • Do not trust extreme forecasts. Our model said 84% and reality was 68%. Anyone selling a sure over is overselling.
  • Know your line. Over 2.5 loses on 2-0, Over 2 refunds it, Over 2.25 loses half. Pick the line that matches the outcome you actually expect.
  • Stake small and keep a record. See our bankroll guide, and if betting stops being fun, BeGambleAware offers free, confidential help.

Frequently asked questions

What does over 2.5 goals mean?

The bet wins if the match has three or more goals in total, from both teams together, in normal time. Two goals or fewer is a loss. Because of the half goal, there is never a refund on the 2.5 line.

How often do football matches have over 2.5 goals?

In the 81,113 matches in our database, 54.3% went over 2.5 goals. Over 1.5 landed in 75.7% and over 3.5 in 33.2%. The rate varies a lot by league: 62.8% in the Bundesliga, 58.6% in the Premier League and 48.1% in Serie A.

Which league has the most goals?

Among the major leagues in our data, the Bundesliga (3.22 goals per match), the Eredivisie (3.19) and MLS (3.05) scored most. Serie A (2.55) and the Brazilian Série A (2.51) were among the lowest.

Is over or under the better bet?

Neither made money in our test, but under lost more. Backing Over 2.5 in every match returned -1.7% at Pinnacle and -2.5% at Bet365; backing Under 2.5 returned -7.4% and -9.5%.

Is over 1.5 goals a safe bet?

It lands often, in 75.7% of matches in our data, but the odds are short. Our own 67 Over 1.5 tips won 71.6% at average odds of 1.33 and still returned -4.0%. A high hit rate is not the same as a profitable bet.
