Why it matters for each way: each way bets are mostly placed on bigger prices, and that is exactly where the odds flatter the selection most. In our football data, outcomes priced at 5.00 or more won clearly less often than their odds suggested. The place part of an each way bet softens a loser, but it is paid at a fraction of those same inflated odds, so check the place terms carefully: they decide whether the bet makes sense.

Method: 14,576 home win, draw and away win prices from 4,859 matches since 3 July 2026, bookmaker odds before kick-off, grouped by price. "Odds said" = 1 divided by the odds, so including the bookmaker margin.

What is an each way bet?

An each way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on your selection to win and one on it to place. A 10 each way bet therefore costs 20. The place part pays at a fraction of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5, and the bookmaker sets how many places count.

Worked example

10 each way at 8/1 (decimal 9.00), total stake 20:

Outcome1/4 terms1/5 terms
Wins120.00116.00
Places, does not win30.0026.00
Unplaced0.000.00

The win part returns 10 x 9.00 = 90. With 1/4 terms the place part is paid at 8/1 divided by 4, so 2/1 (decimal 3.00): 10 x 3.00 = 30. With 1/5 terms it is 8/5 (decimal 2.60), so 26. A winner collects both parts.

Each way on multiple bets

Each way also works on doubles, trebles, accumulators and full-cover bets. The win bets and the place bets are then calculated as two separate multiples. Choose another bet type in the calculator above and keep each way switched on.

When is each way worth it?

Each way makes most sense at bigger prices and in events with generous place terms, for example many runners and three or four places paid. At short odds the place part rarely covers the total stake: with 1/5 terms the place half only breaks even on the whole bet when the odds are above 5/1 (6.00).

โ“ FAQ

How much does an each way bet cost?

Twice the stake you enter, because it is one win bet and one place bet. 5 each way costs 10.

What are place terms?

The fraction of the odds paid on the place part, usually 1/4 or 1/5, plus the number of places that count. Both are set by the bookmaker per event.

What happens if my selection wins?

Both parts pay out: the win part at full odds and the place part at the place odds.

Can I lose money if my selection places?

Yes, at short odds. With 1/5 place terms the place part only covers the total stake when the odds are above 5/1 (6.00).

Can I bet each way on football?

Yes, mostly in outright markets such as the league winner or top scorer, where bookmakers pay a fraction of the odds for finishing in the top places.
