Trixie or Patent? On the same three selections the Patent paid out on 97.5% of days and the Trixie on 80.7%: the three singles in a Patent mean one winner is enough for a return. Both were in profit on the same 37.8% of days, the days all three legs won. The Patent costs 7 stakes instead of 4, so it gives a smoother ride, not a better price: over the period the Trixie returned +4.5% and the Patent +3.3%. A plain treble, the riskiest of the three, returned +6.5%; over a few months that gap is luck as much as anything.

Method: every day since 3 July 2026 (4,859 matches) we took the shortest-priced selections inside the odds range, one per match, from match result, double chance, goal lines and both teams to score, with the bookmaker odds before kick-off. Every bet type was settled on the same three legs per day at 1 unit per bet. "Paid out" = share of days with any return, "In profit" = share of days the return beat the total stake, "Return" = profit or loss over the whole period at 1 unit per bet. The same rules pick our daily acca tips.

What is a Patent bet?

A Patent is a full-cover bet on three selections. It consists of 7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble. Because the singles are included, one winner already gives a return. A Patent at 1 per bet costs 7; each way it costs 14.

Worked example

Three selections at 2/1, 3/1 and 6/4 (decimal 3.00, 4.00 and 2.50), 1 per bet, so 7 in total:

All three69.00+62.00
2/1 and 3/119.00+12.00
Only the 2/13.00-4.00

Patent or Trixie?

A Trixie covers the same three selections without the singles: 4 bets instead of 7. It is cheaper, but you need at least two winners for a return.

โ“ FAQ

How many bets are in a Patent?

7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble on three selections.

How much does a Patent cost?

7 times your stake per bet, or 14 times each way.

Do I get a return with one winner?

Yes, from the single on that selection. Whether it covers your total stake depends on the odds.

What if a selection is void?

It counts as odds of 1.00. Its single returns the stake and the doubles and treble continue with the other selections.

What's better, a Trixie or a Patent?

A Patent adds three singles to a Trixie, so one winner is enough for a return; a Trixie needs two. On our own picks the Patent paid out far more often, but both were only in profit on the days all three selections won. The Patent gives a smoother ride, not a better price.
